Banbury West End had 3 matches this week, 2 in the Banbury league and 1 in the Oxfordshire league. The first of the Banbury league matches was an A team match against Brackley B team which West End won 7-2. Men Paul Brown, Mike Norton and Doug Wade just lost one mens 5-6, but won the other two 6-5 and 7-4 The ladies, Karen Brooker, Andi Padbury and Elaine Madle won their games 6-5, 8-3 and 8-3. The 1st mixed was lost 3-8, but the remaining two won 6-5 and 8-3. The 2nd Banbury league match was BWE B team against Banbury B which BWE just won 5-4. Men Jeremy Turner, Mike Rogers and Robin Woodbridge lost two 5-6 but won one 8-3. The ladies, Karen Brooker, Jeannie Henson and Elaine Madle did a bit better winning 7-4 and 10-1 but losing one 3-8. One mixed was lost 5-6 and the remaining games won 6-5 and 8-3. This was an excellent result for West End.
The Oxfordshire match was a ladies A team against Woodstock B team in division 2 which BWE won 3-1. First pair Alison Goult and Rosie Clark had a difficult afternoon just beating the Woodstock 1st pair 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 but losing to the 2nd pair 3-6, 6-4, 2-6. However the 2nd pair Denise Sexton and Andi Padbury had a better afternoon winning 6-1, 6-2 against the Woodstock 1st pair and 6-4, 6-1 against the 2nd pair.

Banbury West End had three matches this week, two in the Banbury league and a mixed in the Oxfordshire league. The mixed was an A team match against a strong Wantage A team which West End did well to draw. 1st pair Karen Brooker and Mike Robinson had an excellent afternoon beating the Wantage 1st pair 7-6, 7-6 and then winning a tough 3 setter against the 2nd pair 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. The BWE 2nd pair, Rosie Clark and Jeremy Turner had a difficult afternoon losing 0-6, 6-7 to the 1st pair and 1-6, 2-6 to the 2nd pair.
The 1st of the Banbury league matches was an E team match (div 4) against a strong Byfield C team in which West End did extremely well and won 5-4. Men Ian Jelfs, Paul Froggatt and John Davis struggled a bit with scores of 4-7, 7-4 and 2-9. The ladies Jane King, Sue Jelfs and Kat Kurgane however had an excellent evening winning 7-4, 6-5 and 7-4. The mixed went mostly Byfield way with scores of 5-6, 3-8 and 8-3.
The 2nd Banbury match was a D team match (div 5) against Deddington D this time West End winning 6-3. Men John Davis, Stuart Madle and Chris Padbury played really well and won 7-4, 8-3 and 7-4. The ladies, Sue Stevens, Sarah Dawes and Barbara Hutchinson had scores of 10-1, 5-6 and 6-5. The mixed again went mostly the way of the opposition, 9-2, 5-6 and 5-6.

Wimbledon draw – we have moved this back 1 week to the 8th May to allow more time for members to apply for tickets (You need to be a fully paid up tennis member and we need your British Team Membership number to be entered on the entry form which is on the notice board by the bar)

Club Tournament (tennis) – We will be displaying the details shortly so please keep an eye on the chalk board above the bar for further details and keep Sunday 29th July free for the finals day and BBQ

Friday 18th May – Social event with music by The Bluestones – put the date in your diary.

Sunday 24th June – Olden days round robin tournament to celebrate the Queens Jubilee. 1.30 for 2pm start dress up in old costumes and play with wooden racquets (if anyone has a few spare racquets in the loft – could we please borrow them?) Coaching for the kids, followed by tea and cucumber sandwiches – more details to be posted on the chalk board in the bar.

Friday 29th June – wine tasting evening

Sunday 1st July – Strawberries and cream / pimms following tennis club night

Sunday 29th July – Finals of club tournament followed by BBQ

Despite a deluge of rain all week, Banbury West End managed to play 3 matches this week, one in the Banbury league and the other two in the Oxfordshire league. The Banbury league match was a BWE B team match against Banbury B which resulted in a 6-3 win for BWE. The West End men, Mike Rogers, Ray Armstrong and Robin Woodbridge lost 3-8, 3-8 and won 7-4. The ladies, Rosie Clark, Alison Goult and Jenny Edwards won 9-2, 8-3 and 6-5. BWE 1st and 3rd mixed won 6-5, 8-3 but 2nd mixed was lost 3-8.

One of the Oxfordshire league matches was a mens A team against Banbury C team which West End won 3-1. First pair Doug Wade and Mike Robinson beat the Banbury 1st pair 6-4, 6-1 but then had a tough 3 setter against the 2nd pair, just winning 3-6, 7-6, 6-3. The BWE 2nd pair, Jeremy Turner and Javier de Diego Lee also just won a tough 3 setter against the 1st pair 7-6, 6-7, 7-5 but lost to the 2nd pair 2-6, 2-6.

The other Oxfordshire league match was a mens B team match against North Oxford G team which resulted in a comfortable 4-0 win for West End. The West End 1st pair, Ray Armstrong and Doug Wade won 6-2, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-2, whilst the 2nd pair, Paul Derbyshire and Dean Harris won 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-2. This was an excellent start to the season for the mens B team

Please note to enter the club’s wimbledon draw, you need to be a member of the LTA, which you can organise for free on the LTA website.

Then simply register for tickets before the 8th May on the form in the bar.

The new summer tennis season is here (but I know the the weather doesn’t reflect this at the moment!).

Just a short email to let you know that the WIMBLEDON TICKET DRAW is to be held at the club (following the club night on Tuesday 1st May) at 8pm. As before, those wishing to apply for tickets need to fulfill the following criteria -
Be fully paid up (current year) tennis members of the club
Have a current BTM number
The Wimbledon ticket notice, rules (from the LTA) and the form (which will need your name and BTM number) will be on the notice board by the side of the bar by the week end.

We have a committee meeting tomorrow evening and following this meeting, I plan to send a members update covering -
Annual subs now due (if paid in April, you qualify for bar vouchers)
FREE Rusty racquet coaching with Gareth starts Thursday 26th April 7pm to 8.30
Summer club nights etc

Banbury West End had 5 tennis matches this week, 3 in the Banbury League and 2 in the Oxfordshire league. The first Banbury league match was BWE A team against local rivals Banbury which Banbury won convincingly. West End men, Paul Brown, Mike Norton and Doug Wade lost their games 1-10, 0-11 and 5-6. The ladies, Rosie Clark, Karen Brooker and Andi Padbury did very slightly better with scores of 5-6, 3-8 and 8-3. The mixed all went to Banbury 3-8, 5-6, 2-9 which resulted in a 1-8 loss for BWE. The other 2 matches in the Banbury league faired much better.
The B team played Banbury B team and won 6-3. The men, Mike Rogers, Ray Armstrong and Robin Woodbridge struggled a bit with scores of 3-8, 3-8, 7-4. The ladies, Rosie Clark, Alison Goult and Jenny Edwards did better winning 9-2, 8-3, 6-5. Two of the mixed went to BWE 6-5, 3-8 and 8-3.
The D team in division 5 had a good 9-0 win against Brackley D team. The West End men, Graham Stevens, Stuart Madle and Chris Padbury won 7-4, 8-3, 8-3 whilst the ladies, Sue Stephens, Sarah Dawes and Barbara Huchinson won 6-5, 7-4 and 6-5. The mixed was won 9-2, 8-3, 9-2. This is an excellent start to the season for the D team
The first of the Oxforshire league matches was a ladies in division 2. First pair Rosie Clark and Alison Goult had a mixed afternoon. The lost to the Mapledurham 1st pair 3-6, 6-4, 0-6 but beat the 2nd pair 6-2, 6-2. Karen Brooker and Andi Padbury playing as 2nd pair won 7-6, 6-2 against the Mapledurham 1st pair, and 6-2, 6-2 against the 2nd pair. A good 3-1 start to the season.
The last match was a mens B match against North Oxford G team. West End 1st pair Ray Armstrong andDoug Wade won 6-1, 6-2 against the NO 1st pair and 6-2, 6-0 against the 2nd. Paul Derbyshire and Dean Harris also had a good afternoon beating the NO 1st pair 6-0, 6-1 and the 2nd pair 6-0, 6-2. Again, an excellent 4-0 start to the summer season.

TENNIS

Banbury West End had two tennis matches this week, a mixed in the Banbury league which was the start of the summer league and a mens in the Oxfordshire league which was the last of the winter league matches. The mixed match was against Kings Sutton during which some rubbers were not completed due to injury. The Kings Sutton 1st pair had to conceed 3 of their 4 sets as one of their players fell badly and injured himself. BWE 1st pair Alison Goult and Mike Robinson beat the Kings Sutton 2nd pair 6-1, 6-1 whilst the West End 2nd pair Rosie Clark and Jeremy Turner won the 1st set against KS 1st pair 6-3. It was the start of the 2nd set that the injury occured, but Jeremy Turner and Rosie Clark also beat the 2nd pair 6-3, 6-1. This resulted in a 4-0 victory for West End; a good start to the season.
The mens A match in division 3 was against Long Crendon A. West End 1st pair Paul Derbyshire and Ray Armstrong beat the Long Crendon 1st pair 6-2, 6-3 and also beat the 2nd pair 6-1, 6-1. The BWE 2nd pair Doug Wade and Javier de Diego had a good afternoon only dropping 4 games. They beat the LC 1st pair 6-0, 6-2 and the 2nd pair 6-1, 6-1. This 8-0 victory means that BWE Mens A team have won division 3 and will therefore gain promotion to division 2 for 2013. There will be dancing in the streets of Adderbury tonight !!

SQUASH

BWE mens A squash team played their final match of the 2011/2012 season against top of the division Bicester B team, which unfortunately resulted in a 2-3 loss. No 1 player Mike Conlon won 3-1, whilst no.2 Nick Stanley lost a hard fought battle 2-3. Mike Norton playing at number 3 won 3-0, but Stuart Madle at no. 4 lost 0-3 and Sam Mahfoudh lost 1-3
